Police excavate buried truck linked to Brazilian cocaine diver’s death

A buried truck has been excavated as part of the investigation into the death of a Brazilian diver and a linked cocaine haul in Newcastle.

Bruno Borges Martins, 31, was found unresponsive in the Hunter River on May 9, 2022, with 54 kilograms of cocaine located nearby.

Borges was believed to have travelled to Australia after allegedly being hired by drug smugglers to retrieve the cocaine bricks from a ship around the time of his death.

To date, two men have been charged and remain before the courts while police continue to search for a second diver, 32-year-old Jhoni Fernandes Da Silva.

After an appeal for information on the two-year anniversary of Borges’ death, on May 28 police executed a search warrant at Menangle in Sydney’s south-west.

During the search, police found a white Mitsubishi Fuso truck which they will allege was used by those involved with the failed drug retrieval.

Police said the buried truck was last seen driving southbound on the M4 Motorway at Pennant Hills, about 6.30pm on May 8, 2022.

Detectives are appealing for any information about a Toyota Townace Van with the NSW registration WNY439, which was seen travelling with the truck.

Investigations under Strike Force Groove are continuing.
