WA mum charged over crash that killed her twin girls faces court

A West Australian mother charged over a car crash that killed her twin girls has had her case mentioned in court for the first time.

Rachel Lisa Van Oyen is facing two counts of careless driving causing death, but did not appear in person, with her lawyer saying she is “struggling with the process”.

Her seven-year-old daughters, Macey and Riley, died when the car they were in veered off the road and hit a tree by the Great Eastern Highway in Carrabin, about 300 kilometres west of Perth.

Police will allege their mother was behind the wheel during the accident on the morning of February 18.

The trio had been travelling back to their home in Halls Head from Kalgoorlie, and detectives said everyone was wearing a seatbelt.

After the crash, 31-year-old Oyen was taken to hospital but later discharged.

She will reappear in court in August.
