The Body Shop has called in administrators which leaves thousands of people at risk of losing their jobs.
The iconic cosmetics chain runs 199 shops across the UK, and while administrators say they will ‘consider all options to find a way forward’, all of those shops are at risk of closure.
Its branches will keep trading in store and online throughout the administration process, which only affects the UK arm of the business with international franchises not impacted.
The Body Shop was founded in 1976 by Anita Roddick and her husband Gordon. It was one of the first companies to focus on ethically produced cosmetics and skincare.
The business’s new owners, European private equity firm Aurelius, only took over in January after buying it from Brazilian cosmetics giant Natura & Co for £207 million.
The announcement comes at a challenging time for retailers, as years of financial struggles caused by the coronavirus lockdowns and the rise of online shopping have hit high street shops hard.
Last year bargain retailer Wilko went into administration, and Paperchase was forced to close all of its shops.
