A major road has been closed in both directions after an explosive was taken to a petrol station.

Bomb disposal experts have been called to the Ron Perry service station on the A19 near Hartlepool, between the A689 Wolverston and the A179.

The nature of the device hasn’t yet been confirmed but there are reports that it is a hand grenade.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: ‘The A19 is currently closed in both directions between A689 Wolverston and the A179.

‘This is due to a suspected explosive device being taken to a garage and waiting to be examined by EOD.

‘Please find alternative routes and thank you for your patience.’

Police announced the closure at around 4pm on Wednesday, and National Highways say there is currently no timescale for reopening the road.

The local fire brigade is also in attendance.

There are major delays on surrounding roads as the closure extends into rush hour, and diversion routes have been signposted.
