Emergency situation declared in Cairns as shots fired after two-car crash

An emergency situation has been declared in Cairns as police hunt down an alleged gunman.

Emergency services were called to Collin Avenue in Edge Hill about 1pm (2pm AEDT) today following reports of a shooting and arrived to find two vehicles had crashed into each other.

One person is believed to have shot at the other before leaving the scene on foot.

About an hour later, police declared an emergency situation and placed boundaries to encompass Pease Street, Woodward Street, Polentz Street and Russell Street.

“Members of the public are advised to avoid the areas of while police respond or stay inside with their doors and windows locked,” police said.

“Parents are able to pick up children from Edge Hill State School via Pease Street.”

Multiple roads around the area may be impacted by police stops as motorists are advised to avoid the area.
