Taylor Swift to thank for Australia’s record-breaking Super Bowl interest

There was record interest from Australians around the 2024 Super Bowl, largely supported by one celebrity face in the crowd.

Millions of people around the world tuned in to watch the Chiefs play the 49ners in Las Vegas yesterday, in a nail-biting game that went into overtime for the second time in the event’s history.

But all eyes were also on Taylor Swift, who flew between shows on her international Eras tour in Tokyo to watch her boyfriend and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce play.

According to Google Trends, Australians reached their second-highest search record for “Taylor Swift” while the game was on yesterday.

The highest search record was made on June 25 last year – the day before the first pre-sale tickets for the Australian leg of Swift’s tour went on sale.

In turn, the nation reached an all-time high of searches for the Super Bowl, which had a 720 per cent spike this week alone.

Within the span of just four hours, there was a 500 per cent spike in searches for “Is Taylor Swift at the Super Bowl” as questions arose whether she would make it to the game between touring.

In the top ten questions searched relating to the Super Bowl, the popstar was mentioned in two of them and her boyfriend in three.

Australians asked: “Who is Taylor Swift’s boyfriend?” and “Did Travis Kelce propose to Taylor Swift”.

It wasn’t just Australians going crazy for Swift. 

When the Chiefs won the overtime against the 49ners, photographers were glued to the singer in the audience and followed her onto the field.

Her appearance at the game also made headlines worldwide.

Media outlets followed what she was doing in the crowd with her celebrity friends Blake Lively, Lana Del Ray and Ice Spice.

Vision of her arriving at the game, chugging a beer with friends and cheering on her boyfriend made the news.

Swift’s influence and interest – in Australia and across the world – is undeniable.

The singer will jet off from the United States to return to touring and this week touch down in Australia.

She will play three shows in Melbourne from this Saturday ahead of four shows in Sydney from Friday next week.
