A popular Santa’s Grotto event has been cancelled only days in advance after Father Christmas was ‘too busy’.

Rawtenstall Market was meant to host Santa on Saturday – but in a statement on Facebook, organisers said the event has been cancelled due to ‘unforeseen circumstances entirely out of our control’.

Full refunds are being offered to anyone who already bought tickets for the Grotto, but the Christmas light switch-on event will still be taking place at the Market this week as planned.

The statement fromk Rawtenstall Market said: ‘It is with a heavy heart that we must share some disappointing news.

‘Due to unforeseen circumstances entirely out of our control, we are sorry to inform you that the Santa Grotto event this year has been cancelled.

‘Unfortunately, Santa has found himself a little too busy this year, and despite our best efforts, we cannot proceed with the planned festivities.

‘We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, and we want to express our gratitude for your understanding.’

One person commented: ‘That’s a poor show, surely something could’ve been arranged rather than let people down when it’s going to be hard to find somewhere else that isn’t booked up.’

Another added: ‘Surely they could find another Santa’ while one offered: ‘I’d be your Santa. It’s Christmas don’t let the kids down…. I work with children got my dbs… no excuses I’m here and willing.’

Others were more forgiving: ‘Can’t be helped sometimes. At least lots of notice.’

Another wrote: ‘Aww! We’ll have to book somewhere else.’
